2007 Adega Coop Ponte Bacca Vinho Verde
Vinho Verde is Portugal's largest wine region. Translated it means "green wine" but that translation does not refer to the color of the wine, but the tradition of drinking this wine young. The worst thing you can do with a Vinho Verde is save it until next year. Known for its slight "fizz" or "frizzante", a bottle of Vinho Verde typically has a low alcohol content (10%-11%) making it the ideal "porch wine" to be consumed in the summer months on the front porch or with a barbecue. It is known for its pleasant fruit and citrus characteristics and with a price tag usually no higher than $10.00 a bottle, it has a great quality-price ratio ("QPR").
We recently enjoyed the 2007 Adega Coop Ponte Bacca Vinho Verde. The wine had a light straw color. On the nose we noted citrus, lemon, grapefruit scents with hints of pear and apple. The wine was delightful, light and had a complete citrus taste including grapefruits, lemons, and kiwi. It still had a good mid-palate but lacked a bit in its finish (this may have had to do more with its 2007 vintage than anything). All in all, a great summer wine and at less than $10.00 per bottle, a great value. Just remember not to cellar this one, but feel free to "pop and pour"!
