2008 Crios de Susana Balbo
Torrontes is a widely planted grape
varietal in Argentina that is quickly becoming that country's signature white
wine grape. Argentina has been making wine since the 1500s, tracing its wine
heritage back to Spain, France and Italy. The
aromas and flavors of torrontes generally resemble a floral
nose with a taste of peach, apricot, apple and watermelon. It is a medium bodied wine
with sweet white fruit on the palate that does well on its own as an “aperitif”
on a warm summer day or paired with spicy
Thai or other Asian cuisine, tangy cheeses or seafood dishes. At just $10-$16
for most offerings, the price is definitely right. Torrontes is meant to be drunk
young; consequently it is rarely aged in oak, which would only
mask the beauty of the wine. This particular torrontes is
made by Susana Balbo, a very well respected winemaker in Argentina. She has
established her reputation by emphasizing precision viticulture and
skillful winemaking. "Crios" means "offspring,"
indicating younger wines that have not quite "grown up" to the level
of maturity as Balbo’s more elite wines, although they receive the same care
and attention in the winery. Crios (or offspring) is also represented in the
graphic of the hands on the label. The two smaller hands within the larger hand
on the label represent her children while the larger one represents Balbo. The Crios de Susana Balbo Torrontes 2008 is pleasantly perfumed with
aromas of apricot, nectarine, and citrus. On the taste Crios, gives us
hints of nectarines, peaches, orange citrus and apricot. It is a dry and well balanced wine with an elegant
finish. Very
well done Ms. Balbo. I would highly
recommend any of her wines, but if you have not tried a Torrontes, try this
one.
