2008 Coteaux du Languedoc Picpoul de Pinet

Always on the lookout for new varietals to expand my palate, I was in my local Whole Foods store  and came across this bottle.  To be honest, it was the term "Languedoc" on the bottle that drew my attention (as well as the wonderful $10.00 price tag!).  This little gem turned out to be quite the surprise!

Picpoul is a varietal that originated in southern France and is often used as one of many varietals in blends as opposed to a single varietal.  It's high acidity makes it an excellent wine to pair with shellfish and it is an excellent choice with rich, soft cheeses. Picpoul is typically crystal clear with green highlights, though can be more golden from older vines. It generally has a soft, delicate nose, with pleasant hints of acacia and hawthorn blossom. Delicate and fresh in the mouth it has an excellent acid/structure balance. (www.picpoul-de-pinet.com)

The 2008 Coteaux du Languedoc Picpoul de Pinet has scents of  pear, pineapple, lime, and a hint of rich mineral aromas  The taste is crisp and refreshing.  It has a good bit of acidic lime flavor, but by no means will it make you run from this wine.  The mineral flavors come through like a wet rock.  The "backend" of the palate gives you pears and minerals, and it lasts a very, very long time. Picpoul is a fantastic find for me and I know it will be for you.
