A Super Tuscan with a great QPR

Last night for dinner we had a last minute change of plans from grilled burgers to take-out Italian.  So, I put the Zin back in the cellar and brought out the "little" Super Tuscan that I had recently picked up from Holiday Market in Canton.

The 2006 Tenuta Monteti Caburnio was "tagged" by the staff at Holiday as one of their faves— so I bought it to see if I agreed.  Needless to say— I do!

This "little" Super Tuscan is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 25% Alicante Bouschet (yes, the "new varietal self" in me was excited to hear of this unknown varietal).  As I recall, it was about $17.00 per bottle at Holiday Market and worth every penny.

Holiday described the wine as having bold fruit, earthy tones and smooth.  I have to agree.  The Caburnio is full of scents of blackberries, blueberries, herbs and a hint of spice.  On the palate, this well balanced Italian red gave me tastes of blackberries, dark red berries, some earthiness, and herbs. With very smooth tannins and moderate acidity, this is a wonderful example of what a Tuscan wine can be.  Kudos to Holiday Market for its recommendation.  I will be back in to pick some more up soon!

Cheers!
