I give you. . . Ribolla Gialla!

In my never ending quest to join the Wine Century Club, I am always on the lookout for new varietals to try.  Last Wednesday, I found new subject— Ribolla Gialla— and I liked it so much that I bought a bottle and shared it with my wife and sister-in-law yesterday watching the NFL Championship games.

Ribolla Gialla ("Ree-bol-lah Jahl-lah"), or sometimes more simply "Ribolla", is a grape varietal grown mostly in the Friuli-Venezia Guilia region of north eastern Italy.

Ribolla Gialla is a white wine grape used both as a single varietal or in blends made to drink young. Its history dates back to the 1200s and Ribolla Gialla is still produced on a limited basis by many Friuli wine makers. Its production is almost lost though, in the popularity of Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc, that also comes pouring out of the region. The Ribolla Gialla grape produces a wine that is typically deep yellow in color, light bodied with high acidity and floral notes.

I picked up the 2008 Jermann Vinnae Ribolla Gialla after trying it at a tasting at Paesano's Restaurant in Ann Arbor (a great experience by the way— tastings of Italian wines every Wednesday).

The Jermann family vineyard was founded in 1881 by Antonio Jermann.  Today it is operated by Antonio's great-grandson Silvio, who is known for his dedication to his vineyard and cellar and for producing wines that are bold and complex.  The 2008 Vinnae has a brilliant deep yellow color.  On the nose it showed hints of citrus and fruit with a touch of minerality.  The Vinnae has a palate full of wonderful lemons and great acidity. This Italian white would be a great summer varietal to pair with chicken and seafood dishes.

As always, expand your palate!  Cheers!
