Century Club Application Update

A little over a year ago, I set out to join a unique and exclusive group of wine enthusiasts. . . the Wine Century Club. To become a member of this group one simply needs to have tried and documented tasting at least 100 different wine varietals. It is an international group with local chapters in various locales in the United States as well as London and Hong Kong. These local chapters meet regularly for tastings of, as you might expect, unique wine varietals. This group is always trying new things and expanding their palates and I thought it would be the perfect group for me to join.
Now, at that time, I thought that I had a tried a large number of wine varietals. Was I mistaken. When I initially filled out the application, which is not much more than a list of the different varietals tasted, I believe I had tried 34. Did have a long way to go!!
Since that time, I have constantly been looking for unique and diverse varietals in every wine store I visit. I am also diligent in restaurants and wine tastings, to try varying varietals instead of the old favorites. I have been attending wine tastings at Paesano in Ann Arbor, which has helped because Italy produces hundreds of different varietals as compared to "boring old France" who, I would guess, has less than 50 varietals to choose from generally.
I am happy to report that through my efforts of the past year, my "count" currently stands at 84 different varietals. 16 to go! My goal is to have my application completed by the end of June. . . a tall order, but I think I have it in me. I have enjoyed the "work" so far in completing 84 varietals and look forward to completing the last 16 to become a member of the exclusive Wine Century Club.
If you are interested in taking the challenge, the Century Club site is http://www.winecentury.com/.
The Century Club recently awarded Le Grand Prix Du Cepage to the member with the most varietals on his resume. . . it went to a huge wine enthusiast from Georgia with a whopping total of 431 varietals notched on his records.
As always, don't be afraid to try new things! Cheers!
